about

"Blending funk with hip-hop they create a real party album in the great tradition of artists like Sly And The Family Stone and De La Soul." - The Beats Surrender

"If you’re after a Hip Hop album with out all the bullshit that comes with that scene then maybe you ought to check these guys out. - Street Voice

"I.C.H.I.L.E. is a breathtaking album of mature, modern music that's hard to pigeonhole but easy to absorb - loads to admire and nothing to fault. Distinctly hip-hop/rap oriented but with massive jazzy undercurrents, blissfully soulful vocalisation and a bucket-full of pop sensibility, Cantaloop have contrived to come up with a style that's fresh, bright and easy on the ear." - Toxic Pete

“Well worth checking out. There’s something for everyone” - Mojo

“Hits you with immediate effect. The optimistic atmosphere of this album will make you feel good for no particular reason!” – Blues & Soul

‘I.C.H.I.L.E.’ (Ice Cream Headache In Left Eye) is Cantaloop’s latest album and what an album it is. The music is as eclectic, visceral and witty as the title suggests. At a point in their careers where most acts are struggling for new ideas, Cantaloop have created some of their best work yet.

Produced by Gavin Monaghan (Editors, Scott Matthews) the album immediately grabs your attention through it’s refusal to be pigeon holed. From the D ‘n’ B beats and jazz-lounge bass lines of ‘Friendly Fire’ to the blasting horns on opening track and lead single ‘Brotherhood’ Cantaloop never get bogged down in any one genre. This diversity is a clear reflection and result of the array of different acts that Monaghan has worked with, along with the band’s own genre spanning tastes.

However, it is not only the instrumentation that is ear catching, vocalist Dannie Dee’s biting social commentary and fluent lyricism is guaranteed to turn heads. Dee uses the album as a platform to air his views on everything from personal friendships to the state of modern society with the sort of insight that marks him out as a truly original lyricist.

Cantaloop also excel as a live band, each member being accomplished instrumentalists. Unsurprisingly their show stopping live performances have won them prestigious support slots for the likes of De la Soul and Fun Lovin’ Criminals. The latter were so impressed by Cantaloop that they remix live favourite ‘Real Thing’ as a bonus track for the album – with plans to remix the entire thing in the near future.

At a time when many of their peers are lacking in both style and substance, Cantaloop provide both in ample supply. This is bling-free hip-hop without gimmicks, without pretension and without equal!
